That 30 for 30 show was awfully good. I wish I could have seen how his career would have panned out in both football and basketball but it doesn't seem to bother him. Hunting and fishing were always his favorite sports and he can still do those.

If I remember right, that would have set a record for signing bonus at the time. Signing bonuses didn't take off until a few years later.

Is that what worth meant? I wasn't sure. 4.1 seconds to first base is quick but not even close to the quickest:

Lefty Batters Running To 1B.

3.2--Mickey Mantle, Yanks
3.3--Mickey Mantle, Yanks
3.4--Mickey Mantle, Yanks

3.6--Gene Woodling, Yanks
3.7--Larry doby, Indians

3.9--Jim Rivera, White Sox

Righty batters runing To 1B

Good article on Trout from last year I think.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vau...81/1/index.htm

Funny what the original Angels scout said about him. Some excerpts.

"One day Bane, along with Angels cross-checker Jeff Malinoff, came to Millville with Morhardt. By then Morhardt's obsession with Trout was a source of amusement in the Angels' front office. Recently, G.M. Jerry Dipoto, who was hired after last season, asked to see the club's original reports on Trout. Morhardt had written, "Best athlete. Best player in the world—period. Best player on the planet."

On the day the Angels brass showed up in Millville, Trout went 0 for 2 with a walk against a pitcher throwing 75 mph. Malinoff immediately picked up on the awkward way Trout gripped the bat. He started to talk about his mechanics in concerned tones. Morhardt stopped him. "Jeff," the scout said, "he's a Hall of Famer. Leave him alone."

Morhardt hung up, turned to Bane and lied, "It's all set. Ready to go. Slot."

In the war room Bane asked his scouts to write down the four best players in the draft. All began with Stephen Strasburg, the pitcher from San Diego State—all but one. Bane read Morhardt's list out loud, "Trouter, Trouter, Trouter, Trouter." Everybody cracked up.

Has to be wrong. Bo Jackson a full second slower than some white guy from the 50's?? No way that is right.

Doesn't matter in this case. Mantle could have started on the left side and Bo on the right and Bo would have ran over Mantle on the way to 1st.

Bo wasn't great at baseball in terms of overall production. Averaged about .280, 20 something hr's and 80 ribbies. He just had so much raw talent he was exciting to watch.

Wasn't even close to .280. Boey would have had a Kirk Gibson type legacy of individual great plays.

can't compare the 50's with now, at least that is what irish tim says

back then they didn't have stop watches, they used the "one mississippi, two mississippi" method

lebron who?

Interesting, thx for taking the time to post it.

The guy did two things I never saw before on a baseball diamond:
broke a bat on a check swing without touching the ball,
and I never saw a guy run up the fence before him either.

I was a fan , seemed like a genuine good guy that enjoyed the games like a kid.

I liked the routine ground ball to second base that he beat out for his first major league hit. The second basemen looked shocked that Bo was so quick.

Bo still has the record for fastest time in the 40 at the NFL combine, 4.12. Second fastest is 4.27 by Chris Johnson.

That's impossible ....

Athletes are getting better.

No athlete 30 years ago could compete with today's athletes ...
