Wenger accused Shawcross and Robert Huth of fouling Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes as Stoke rallied to find an equaliser in a Premier League game at the Britannia Stadium last month.

Shawcross has been the subject of criticism from Wenger on a number of occasions, following Stoke's home win over the Gunners in their first Premier League campaign and also last season when a clumsy tackle by Shawcross resulted in Aaron Ramsey sustaining a broken leg.

"I don't mind people having their opinions, but if it's not a game involving his players then I don't see the point of bringing up me and Huthy," Shawcross told the Stoke Sentinel. "I've watched the video again and at no point did I go anywhere near Gomes.

"I didn't think I had, but I didn't want to say I hadn't touched him before looking at the whole video to make sure.

"He's obviously got something against me. It's just weird he brings my name into it.

"He always seems to have a problem with Stoke, our manager and certain players. Criticism doesn't bother me, unless it's a false accusation like this one. It's just disappointing he came out and said something that wasn't needed.

"He could have said there was a problem week-in, week-out in the Premier League, but he shouldn't have named individuals."

Stoke reacted angrily when Wenger's comments were first published on Arsenal's official website - making complaints to the Football Association, the Premier League and to Arsenal. The Gunners removed the comments from their website but no further action was taken by the governing bodies.

Wenger had said: "It is more rugby on the goalkeepers than football. When you see the way Shawcross kicked Gomes, how Huth pushed Gomes in the goal, you cannot say that is football anymore."

Oranje coach Bert van Marwijk claimed that Kuyt, who scored the opening goal in Netherlands' 5-0 rout of San Marino on Friday, had "strained and possibly torn ligaments in his shoulder" after falling awkwardly during training.

And Van Marwijk revealed that he expected the injury to rule the 30-year-old out for a few weeks.

"He will probably have a few weeks off and at 4pm today he will step on to the plane to Liverpool", Van Marwijk told De Telegraaf on Monday.

Liverpool have as yet refused to comment on the injury, as Kuyt is expected to undergo further tests with the club's medical staff to determine the full extent of the problem.

Rooney was one of England's best performers in their 4-0 victory over Bulgaria on Friday - playing a part in all four goals - however, his place in the team in Basel had come under question after lurid claims in two Sunday newspapers.

The Manchester United frontman travelled with the team to Switzerland, however, and Capello said he was confident the player was in the right state of mind to take his place on Tuesday.

"Yes he will play," Capello said. "During training he was really good and I spoke with him and he's happy to play. I know the players when they want to play - that is really important. Against Bulgaria he was really, really good on the pitch.

"He will also be in a good situation tomorrow. I hope the performance of Rooney tomorrow will be the same as at Wembley. We are focused on the game, not about the private life of the players. We are here to play this game and train very well.''

Skipper Steven Gerrard said he expected Rooney to put the off-field matter to one side as England look to begin their qualification campaign with back-to-back wins.

"Yeah he's got an issue off the pitch put I don't think that will stop him from playing well,'' Gerrard said. "I spoke with him today at lunchtime and in training and Wayne's been fine. He's looking forward to the game and playing well.

"I think football can do that sometimes (help you focus) if you've got an issue of the field. Once the game starts Wayne will be focused on the field and getting the three points.

"Wayne's a big character. You expect big performances from Wayne every time he steps on the pitch. You saw that against Bulgaria. I expect another big performance from Wayne.''

Capello denied he had been more lenient with Rooney than with John Terry, whom he removed as captain following allegations about his private life.

"He was captain,'' the Italian said. "He played in all of the games, I never suspended him."

You’ve probably read the Wayne Rooney in Not Very Good Role Model Shock! stories, detailing how the Manchester United and England striker (allegedly) paid prostitute Jennifer Thompson for sex while his wife Coleen was pregnant. Click that link if you want to read a story that’s part Rooney exposé, part advertisement for said prostitute.

Obviously it’s no surprise that the English press is publishing scandalous stories about England players again. It reminded me of something from Ethan’s Rafa Honigstein interview on the England blog. German born but English based journalist Honigstein suggested that German tabloids are just as capable of digging up dirt on German national team players, but are more judicious about what’s worth publishing. Honigstein’s exact line was “Bild have tons of material on people that they won’t use.” I don’t imagine the News of the World or the Sunday Mirror has any material they wouldn’t use. Because scandal sells papers. But in a weird way, this story doesn’t feel like a big deal to me.

We already knew from way back that Wayne Rooney enjoys the pleasures of paid lady company. That’s not news. We know he smokes as well, and we know he sometimes swears at referees. We shouldn’t try and pretend that he’s any sort of role model, and I’m with Rob on the England blog in hoping that Rooney plays vs Switzerland and plays well.

Does that mean I’ve lowered my standards of what to expect from England footballers? Maybe as an England fan I’m now fully desensitized to scandal after the exploits of Ashley Cole, John Terry and others. Maybe the News of the World would have to publish an exclusive revealing that Joe Hart played a pivotal role in starting World Wars I and II and that Frank Lampard Jnr. is actually Satan himself for me to be genuinely outraged at this point.

There’s an argument that footballers are representing their nation and so should uphold certain moral ideals. And I agree with that up to a point. If Joe Hart did start both World Wars or Lampard was Beelzebub, then neither should be allowed to play for England again. But in the case of Rooney, maybe we have to accept that footballers are just people and that people do weird things and make stupid mistakes. If we’re really interested in them as footballers and not just celebrities then we should all be mature enough to just ignore the scandal and go back to watching them play football. And that includes you, English tabloids.
